2027 Corvette On Track Technical Preview

Some of the Traction team, including our principal agent, recently had an opportunity to get an exclusive, first hand look at the 2027 Chevrolet Corvette’s on track at Atlanta Motorsports Park. Of course, we’re no strangers to just how amazing Corvettes can be on track, but without question the C8s are technical marvels and a unique experience. Some of our clients easily piloting them deep in to the 1:30s around Road Atlanta in stock trim with just a set of 200TW track tires.

So what made this event different was this was beyond just lap times and a couple of spec sheets. This was an opportunity to deep dive with Chevrolet’s engineering team and get a first hand, detailed and intimate look at the highly anticipated 2027 Corvette lineup. Also, these were no parade laps. These were at speed laps with professional drivers and coaches.

On Track With Record Setting Drivers

In fact, our principal agent Holly Pezzano got Brian Wallace, Chevrolet’s Lead Vehicle Dynamics Engineer and the driver who set the record lap time for the Corvette ZR1 at both the Nürburgring (6:50.763) and Road America (with a blistering 2:06.6).

Holly is an experienced HPDE participant and member at AMP. She’s driven this track herself at speed numerous times. And as you’d expect she still learned a few things from Wallace. In fact, Holly specifically mentioned that Wallace helped her redefine what it means to drive AMP and what “the curb is the track,” there meant compared to what she’s experienced at a typical track day or HPDE.

Hands On With The Corvette Engineers

One thing that made this event different was this wasn’t marketing people giving the standard talking points. It was a hands on and interactive opportunity to ask key members of the Corvette engineering team questions. And what added to the experience was how remarkably casual it all us. We were able to pick up, inspect, and discuss physical components—such as the massive Carbon Ceramic Brakes (CCBs)—and speak directly with the engineers behind the cars.

Led by Assistant Chief Engineer Mike Kociba and Corvette Chief Engineer Josh Holder, the discussions ranged from curb weight optimization to the intricacies of the differential and the engineering of the new AWD system in the Grand Sport X and ZR1X’s.

At the heart of the Stingray, Grand Sport, and Grand Sport X is Chevrolet’s new massive 6.7-liter (409 cubic inch) naturally aspirated V8 engine. Boasting a high-compression ratio of 13.0:1, this powerplant pumps out a standard 535 horsepower and 520 lb-ft of torque.

For the Grand Sport X, this heavy-hitting V8 is paired with an electric front axle, turning the vehicle into an all-wheel-drive hybrid beast that unleashes a combined 721 horsepower. This hybrid setup catapults the Grand Sport X down the drag strip in a blistering 10.4 seconds. If you are unfamiliar, the 2027 Grand Sport X replaces what was previously the E-Ray.

While the Stingray and Grand Sport models rely on the massive, deep-growling 6.7-liter pushrod V8, the Z06, ZR1 and ZR1X variants utilize a vastly different engineering masterpiece: a flat-plane crank V8 engine. The later two adding twin turbos for massive amounts of power.

This high-revving motor aspirated engine found in the Z06, the LT6, —creates a distinct, high-pitched European supercar scream rather than a traditional American muscle rumble. By utilizing a flat-plane crankshaft, the engineers minimized rotational inertia, allowing the engine to rev with lightning-fast responsiveness.

When paired with massive twin turbochargers, the ZR1 and ZR1X’s LT7 unleashes up to 1,250 horsepower in the top-tier, all-wheel-drive ZR1X. This setup allows the hyper-Vette to demolish the quarter-mile in an official, sub-nine-second 8.99 seconds, cementing it as one of the fastest accelerating production vehicles on the planet.

The engineering team unveiled key specifications and starting prices for the 2027 model year, ranging from the incredibly capable entry-level Stingray to the insanity that is the ZR1X.

As you can see, with prices starting at $71,000 MSRP if you are looking to take your Corvette on track, or just worried about insuring a Corvette in general, we’d definitely recommend you’d talk to a specialist. With the advanced systems in these cars I’m not sure you’d want to take your Corvette to any shop for repairs, particularly if mandated by a traditional insurance company.

Conclusion

The Corvette does not lack for respect as a track car around here. We see them every weekend we are at the track. Still, one thing we love about the team at Chevrolet who was part of the driving or engineering team is that they exuded a genuine, infectious enthusiasm for these machines and the track. It felt more like a giddy track day participant who loved their car than a marketing event (even if it was one).
