Forman Motorworks to Bring UK-Built Ariel Atoms to the US

Ariel is overhauling how its cars reach America. In an announcement dated October 29, 2026, the British maker named Forman Motorworks of Scottsdale, Arizona, as its exclusive US distributor, with Atoms and Nomads built at Ariel’s own UK factory and sent across the Atlantic. Forman is taking orders now, and the first customer cars are due in summer 2027.
The shift is a big one for a brand whose American cars have, for most of the past 18 years, been built under license in Virginia rather than in England. Under the new arrangement, US buyers are meant to get the same current specifications and factory option lists that UK customers choose from, which Ariel founder Simon Saunders framed as giving Americans the same configuration freedom as buyers at home.
The Full Ariel Atom 4 Line Up Will Be Available
Four models make up the US range, all supplied as rolling chassis built to UK specification.
| Model | What it is |
|---|---|
| Atom 4 | The core exoskeletal road and track car |
| Atom 4R | A stronger Atom rated at 400 bhp |
| Atom 4RR | The motorsport-focused flagship, with a bespoke hand-built engine making 525 bhp |
| Nomad 2 | The on- and off-road sibling, aimed at gravel, desert and trail driving |
The 4RR is the newest of the group: Ariel launched it in 2025 and has promoted it this year as part of the company’s 25th-anniversary push. Pricing for US-delivered cars has not been published in the coverage so far, and the announcement does not spell out how rolling chassis will be completed and registered in individual states.
Forman Motorworks Role
Forman becomes the single point of contact between American buyers and the factory in Crewkerne, Somerset. Its remit goes beyond selling cars:
- Sales: exclusive US distribution of the full Atom and Nomad range, ordered direct from the UK factory
- Parts: supply of replacement and service parts
- Service: maintenance and repairs, through a network of selected service locations at strategic points around the country
The locations of those service points have not been named yet.
Does This Replace TMI AutoTech?
In practice, yes: coverage of the announcement says direct supply from the UK factory supersedes the licensed US manufacturing program. That program has been run since 2008 by TMI AutoTech of South Boston, Virginia, which built North American Atoms and Nomads under the Ariel North America name. What is not yet on the record is any statement from TMI itself, or a reason for the change.
What is known
- TMI signed an exclusive North American license for the Atom 3 that took effect March 1, 2008, and delivered its first car in January 2009.
- It later added the Nomad, moved from Virginia International Raceway to a 60,000 sq ft plant in South Boston in 2016, and was licensed to build the Atom 4 for North and South America.
- The new arrangement makes Forman the exclusive US distributor of UK-built cars, and the reporting describes this as ending the licensed US build model.
- The change was signaled in July 2026, when Ariel sales manager Ben Calderaro-Gunn told CarBuzz the company was weighing two options for the US: building US-spec cars in the UK, or finding a replacement US manufacturer. It chose the first.
What is not yet known
- Whether TMI’s license has formally ended, or when, and whether either company will comment.
- What happens to Ariel North America orders already placed with TMI that have not been delivered.
- Who supports the existing fleet of US-built Atoms and Nomads, many of which use US-specific parts and engines (such as the turbocharged Atom 3S) that the UK factory never offered. Forman’s parts and service role may cover these cars, but the announcement does not say so.
- The announcement covers the US; whether Canada and other markets TMI served move to Forman as well is unclear.
In its most recently indexed version, the Ariel North America website still describes its cars as built under license by TMI and lists Forman as an authorized distributor, so the public picture may lag the new arrangement. However, as of the publishing of this article the ArielNA website appears to be down, which may signal further changes are coming.
When The New Imports Begin
The first Forman-imported cars arrive in early 2027, with customer deliveries following that summer.
| When | Milestone |
|---|---|
| Oct 29, 2026 | Partnership announced; Forman begins taking order inquiries |
| Q1 2027 | Forman’s first two demonstrators, an Atom 4 and an Atom 4R, delivered from the UK (both under construction now) |
| Summer 2027 | First customer cars delivered in the US |
These are planned dates. Ariel builds every car by hand to order, so individual delivery slots will depend on build queue and specification.
A Long Relationship
Forman is not new to the brand. Founder Franz Forman became the first Ariel dealer in the US in January 2009, the same month the first TMI-built Atom 3 reached a customer. In the 17-plus years since, the dealership says it has sold more than 200 new and used Ariels, and it has long offered Ariel-specific servicing, storage and shipping. Saunders pointed to that track record, and Forman’s grasp of what individual buyers want, as the reason Ariel chose it.
Ariel Atom Insurance: Trailered-Only vs Street-Legal
Insurance for an Ariel Atom is usually broken up into a couple of two policies, depending on how it is used. For street driven or trailered only Ariel Atoms, you’ll need a policy to protect it on the street (where applicable), in storage and while in transit. For those who track their Ariel Atom, there is also consideration of a separate on-track policy for HPDE days.
The starting fact is legal status. Ariel North America sells every Atom as off-road-only at the federal level; any state registration of the Ariel Atom is the owner’s responsibility, recorded on the Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin. That status drives which kind of policy fits.
| Trailered-only Atom | Street-registered Atom | |
|---|---|---|
| Policy type | Off-track insurance: storage, trailer and paddock coverage | Ariel Atom Insurance For Street Driven Ariel’s, including those registered in Montana. |
| Where it covers | In storage, at the repair shop, on the trailer including loading and unloading, in the paddock, even at hotels overnight; typically everywhere but the racing surface | In storage, in transit and on public roads |
| On-track damage | Not included; add track day insurance by the day, event or year | Not included; add track day insurance by the day, event or year |

Practical points for Atom owners, drawn from Traction’s guidance:
- Insist on the right identification. You may want to consider avoiding agents who write an unusual car as some other model to get it through underwriting. That can cause problems keeping coverage, at claim time and in valuation. An Atom should be insured as an Ariel Atom, VIN and all.
- Non-standard VINs are workable. Specialty carriers handle chassis numbers and short VINs on purpose-built cars.
- Open-cockpit is not a dealbreaker. Certain specialty carriers will not have an issue writing open-cockpit cars that mainstream insurers turn down as “too race-like.”
- Insurance is not registration. Just because you can get insurance, does not guarantee registration or vice versa. Check with your state and research insurance before committing. Some states like North Carolina and California can be particularly challenging.
- Use limits matter. Enthusiast policies are priced for limited use; an Atom used as a daily driver or for regular commuting may not qualify. Storage matters too and other qualifications may exist.
